about

“The initial idea for this song was more of a straight-up, four-on-the-floor electronic tune,” Mortensen says. “And when Emily brought her vocal in, she had this Pat Benatar-esque, ‘I am woman, hear me roar,’ female-empowerment aura. It screamed for bigger guitars in the chorus.” Adds Rath: “‘Rebel’ to me was about hearing all the voices in your mind and deciding, ‘Okay, who are you going to listen to—and how are you going to battle the ones that are trying so hard to bring you down?’”

lyrics

I’ve got these demons in my mind
They’re playing with me and I don’t know why
I want to tell them run and hide
But they know just how to dress in their disguise

I am my own worst contender
I wear my shield and my armor
Not picking sides
‘Cause they’re both mine
My demons know I’m the rebel
I am my problem, my answer
I’m soldier and the commander
Not picking sides
‘Cause they’re both mine
My demons know I’m the rebel

They want to twist me ‘til I’m weak
Confuse me and abuse is what they seek
But I got weapons they can’t find
They’re hidden down deep inside my own mind

I am my own worst contender
I wear my shield and my armor
Not picking sides
‘Cause they’re both mine
My demons know I’m the rebel
I am my problem, my answer
I’m soldier and the commander
Not picking sides
‘Cause they’re both mine
My demons know I’m the rebel
